The Registration Of Marine Corps Marathon - Runners from around the world are preparing to register for the 36th annual Marine Corps Marathon (MCM). The date commemorates the anniversary of the flag raisings during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II, Mount Suibachi on Feb. 3, 1945, while the battle proceeded. Registration for the marathon opens Wednesday at noon EST. The MCM is the fifth largest U.S. marathon and ninth in the world, according to Insider Nova.

Each year, the MCM begins in Arlington, continues through the nation’s capital and finishes at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Rosslyn, according to Inside Nova. MCM is open to 30,000 participants and nearly 4,000 service members have already registered for the race. Last year’s race sold out in six days, according to Army Times.
“The flag raising on Iwo Jima remains signific

ant to all of the men and women who are serving today,” says MCM Race Director Rick Nealis. “Having the memorial site as the MCM finish makes the marathon even more memorable for all who participate,” according to Insider Nova. The 36th Marine Corps Marathon will be held on Sunday, October 30, 2011.
